Its funny how....nowadays NRI bachelors seem more worried about daal & chawal than the bachelorettes!!
Couple of months back, there was some office work we had to do after office hours. Now, if you are a bright little thing asking how it can be office work if you have to do it from home, wait till you get sent onsite as a project engineer and then you will know! Anyways, one of the guys from office was assigned to do it. A little after 9 in the night, I get a call from him saying he was half way through and asking if I could take over. If you think it was because his wife suddenly went into labour or his apartment just caught fire, you are gravely mistaken. It was something way more serious; he had to go cook for the next day!! The irony tickled me, as I couldn't imagine men from my dad's generation calling one of their female colleagues at home to take over some office work, because they had to go cook for the family!!
I feel desi guys abroad are more bothered about preparing an Indian meal for lunch the next day, than us women. These are the very guys who in India, when the women of the house were on their death beds (mind you, that was the only time women got permission to stay away from the stove!!) went straight to the Muniyandi Vilas round the corner or worst case scenario, settled for dried up, century old bread from the medical store, rather than attempt the herculean task of 'making' rice!! All you have to do to verify my claim is to look at the orkut albums of desi bachelors abroad.....sambar, vada, dosa, naan, a million curries, biryani, pappad, even payasam!! You would end up betting your life that they are all there getting their degrees from culinary school!!
Am aware that, all women who started reading this with a lil smile and reached here with an exponentially growing grin, are thinking...."Wow! What a perfect world. All we have to do now is somehow shift pregnancy to men and we'll have it made. Not so ladies. Yesterday I was chatting with a friend of mine who is currently in London. Apparently he'll soon be moving to a remote corner of UK where there are no desi restaurants (for which, he has my fullest sympathy...considering I live in Japan!!). Back to the story, sir needs to learn to cook. But not to worry, he doesn't have to start from scratch, he already knows the basics. He already knows how to prepare (Ladies, this is where you hang on tight to your seats) cornflakes!!.....Don't look at me like that!! I am NOT exaggerating, that is exactly what he said!! And it is no fault of mine you fell out of your chair, I warned you!
I guess the complete reversal of roles ain't gonna happen in our generation, uh!!
PS: I've signed up for classes on 'How to prepare cornflakes'. He is booked full for the next three months. But I can get you in using my influence. Do you think I'll master the art of "preparing" cornflakes before I get married? I've been worried sick over this and in the process have lost all my finger nails. Any advice would be appreciated.
